Nighthawks Roll Past Biola

No. 20 Northwest Nazarene creates a big margin in the first quarter and never lets Biola back in the game.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- An upset win against the same opponent in back-to-back years wasn't in the cards for the Biola Eagles on Saturday. No. 20 Northwest Nazarene used a great full-court press to create a comfortable lead over Biola at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, winning

The Nighthawks improve to 6-0 on the season with the win and avenge their loss to Biola in Southern California last November. Meanwhile, the Eagles finish 1-1 on the weekend after having a hard time getting their early shots to fall against one of the top-ranked teams in the West Region.

The Eagles actually jumped out to the early lead in the first two minutes with an three from Jazz Benn to open the scoring and a layup from Mikayla Greens. But Northwest Nazarene quickly erased the Eagles' 5-2 lead by applying a full-court press that resulted in a 17-0 run that put Biola in a 19-5 hole.

The Eagles would shot percent in the first quarter to reach 14 points after 10 minutes but Benn's three pointer would be the only three-pointer of the entire first half for Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team. That made it too difficult for the Eagles to catch an opponent that shot 53 percent from the field and made 12 of its 16 free throw attempts in the first half.

Northwest Nazarene scored 28 points in each of the first two quarters while Greens led the way for Biola with 10 of the Eagles 27 points in the first half. Greens has now scored in double figures in three-straight contests and four of the last five while Danita Estorga scored at least 10 points for the third game this season and was Biola's second-leading scorer on Saturday.

The Eagles finally got a few three-pointers to fall in the second half and was only outscored by four points over the final 20 minutes. Kayla Macedo went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc in the second half to collect nine points while Jelissa Puckett had another efficient contribution for Nakamura's group, scoring eight points in nine second-half minutes by making all her shots from the field.

Biola finished the game with a .431 shooting percentage and will return to Chase Gym on Thursday Nov. 29 to begin PacWest play against Notre Dame de Namur. The Eagles defeated the Argos 69-50 in their only meeting last season.
