Biola Grounds RiverHawks

Key shots down the stretch and a number of important scoring runs help Biola defeat Northeastern State, 74-62.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball continued its winning ways on Friday and set itself up for the start of a bird-streak after the Eagles' volleyball team with a 74-62 win over the RiverHawks of Northeastern State.

It was a back-and-forth game in the early going for Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group. But the Eagles made a number of important runs throughout the game to keep Northeastern State in comeback mode.

The first of those runs started at the media timeout in the first quarter, when two free throw from Danita Estorga drained two free throws to tie the game at 10-10. Those two points were the start of a 13-3 run to finish out the quarter and give the Eagles a 21-13 lead and part of a very strong first quarter for Estorga. The combo/guard forward made all four of her shots in the first 10 minutes, two from the charity stripe and two from three-point range, to score eight points and eventually lead Biola is scoring in the first half.

Northeastern State limited the Eagles to 11 points in the second quarter and even took a three-point lead with 1:17 to go in the first half. But it was the Eagles' custom to finish quarters strong on Friday, and the mini burst in the second quarter came in the form of five points from Estorga and Jelissa Puckett that gave Biola a 32-30 lead headed into halftime.

Biola's five unanswered points to end the half also began a 18-0 run for the Eagles as they prevented the RiverHawks from scoring in the first six minutes of the third quarter. Forward Jazz Benn and Mikayla Greens combined for 11 points during that run to start great second halves from Biola's post players.

Greens recorded ger second double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the contest while Benn collected eight points and six boards in the second half to finish with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The RiverHawks would respond to the Eagles' early scoring in the second half by bringing the game within five points at 45-40 in favor of Biola. But junior guard Tatum Brimley stepped in the gap and drained two threes in the final minute of the third quarter to maintain the Eagles' breathing room. Brimley was perfect from the field in the third quarter for eight points before sinking six free throws in the final period on the way to 16 second-half points.

Brimley has now scored in double figures in back-to-back games and her 18 points on Friday is the most she scored since collecting 19 in Biola's win over Northwest Nazarene last November.

Ironically, No. 13 Northwest Nazarene will be the Eagles next opponent. Biola will travel back to Azusa on Saturday to face the Nighthawks at 1 p.m. A win over NNU would give women's basketball a three-game winning streak over bird-related mascots and give the Eagles' their first step towards imitating Biola Volleyball's 35-match winning streak over bird-related opponents.
