Biola def. USK, 90-53
Biola and Saint Katherine meet for the second time in less than a week this Wednesday night as the Eagles and Firebirds do battle inside of Chase Gym. It's a rematch of last Thursday's thriller that saw Biola win its third game of the year by dropping 90 points for the second-straight game. The Eagles came out on top 90-53 to win the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Alex Talma was that game's leading scorer, with 16 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes. Four of Biola's five starters hit double-digit point totals and 14 Eagles registered at least one point in the contest. Biola shot 48 percent, while holding the Firebirds to just 35 percent from the floor and 23 percent (7-of-30) from three-point range. Johnathon Ross was the Firebirds' most effective player, scoring 11 points and pulling down five rebounds while playing a game-high 35 minutes. This week, Biola hosts a USK team that's going to be coming in quite tired after a stretch of three games in three days. Saint Katherine opened the week with a 95-63 loss to Westmont, play Hope International on Tuesday and then get BU on Wednesday. It's all part of a wild stretch of play for USK, who takes one day off for Thanksgiving and then gets another stretch with three games over the next four days, making it six games in eight days.
NICE REBOUND: Biola has been the top rebounding team in the PacWest Conference through the preseason. The Eagles are one of just two teams to have over 200 total rebounds. Their mark of 40.8 rebounds-per-game is tied with the Point Loma Sea Lions for tops overall. Biola has a narrow edge in offensive rebounds, but PLNU leads in defensive boards. Both teams have double-digit advantage in rebounds-per-game over their opponents. BU and PLNU are the only two teams in the conference to be able to claim that. Talma is, of course, a big reason for Biola's success in this area. He's led the team with 9.4 rebounds-per-game. The big man had double-digit rebounds in each of the first three games, but just six in each of the last two times out. He still leads all players in the conference, with a .1 advantage over a player from ART U.
HOME, SWEET HOME: Biola Men's Basketball has loaded its preseason schedule with home contests. The Eagles play 58 percent of their games at home this season, which is BU's highest percentage of home contests since they went 11-8 in 19 home games during the 2013-14 season. Biola will need home court to be a place of advantage in order to have a successful season this year. The Eagles were 30-1 at home from 2015-17, but were just 8-7 inside of Chase Gym last season. Biola is off to a 3-1 start at home this year, with one last preseason home game preceding an interesting conference home schedule. The Eagles host just six home matches over a three-month stretch between the start of conference season (Nov. 29) and the start of the final two weeks of the season (Feb. 12). Then, Biola hosts five consecutive home games between Feb. 19 and March 2 to end its season.
YEAR 39: Dr. Dave Holmquist just keeps humming along. He's in his 39th season coaching his alma mater and is holding steady in fifth place in the all-time wins list among four-year college men's basketball coaches. Holmquist's 961 wins are third-most among active college coaches, only falling behind Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,100) and Herb Magee of NCAA Division II Jefferson University (1,074). Holmquist has averaged 22.8 wins-per-season, including three years at Fresno Pacific when he first got started in the mid-1970s. If he can get 22 wins this year, he'd set himself up well for a run at win 1,000 in YEAR 40.
MR. 1,000: Trevor Treinen eclipsed 1,000 career points in his last game last season. The four-year senior comes into the year with 1,002 career points. He 334 points-per-season over his last three years, with a career-best 442 points last year. If he can get around 375 this season, he could move into the top-10 all-time among Biola Men's Basketball players. The current No. 10 is Bryan Weakley (1998-02) at 1,322. The highest spot he could likely reach would be seventh. He'd need 417 points to pass Roger Poppen (1960-63) for that spot. Treinen is also near the top of the Biola record books in three-pointers made. He comes into this season with 148 through his first three seasons, eighth all-time. He's within 50 of passing Marcus White, Dakari Archer, Nate Rakestraw, Pierre Zook and Doug Newby to move into third all-time behind Weakley (236) and Danny Campbell (203).
NEXT WEEK: vs. Notre Dame de Namur (0-4) - Thursday Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.;
vs. Holy Names (1-2) - Saturday Dec. 1 at 3 p.m.
