Perfect In Paradise

Biola accomplishes a perfect 3-0 week in Hawaii with win over UHH.

HILO, Hawaii --- Biola saved its biggest match for last during its Hawaiian road trip. The Eagles took on a rested Hawaii Hilo team in a battle of two two-loss PacWest teams and overcame a trying two-point loss in game one to rally back and win 3-1 (24-26; 25-19; 26-24; 25-19).

"It is a phenomenal accomplishment for this team, to go 3-0 in Hawaii is so hard," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "I am so proud of them. We got some positive momentum even though we didn't win game one. Then the key was being able to win game three."

It was a huge win to help keep BU just one game back in the PacWest Conference stadnings and avenge a defeat at the hands of the Vulcans from earlier this year.

Hawaii Hilo controlled the first set from the very first serve. They never trailed in the set as they worked their way to a narrow 26-24 victory. The key for the home team was their NCAA Division I transfer, Bria Beale. Beale ended the game with eight kills and looked like she was about to dominate the night.

"She's a phenomenal player. She was great all night. Early on we could not do anything against her," said Seltzer. "We switched things up and put someone different on her for game two. We even then couldn't really stop her, but she did stop herself a bit."

Beale had the kill that put Hilo up 24-22. Biola was able to successfully defend two set points, but then dropped the last two points of the game to go down 0-1.

The Hilo standout slowed way down offensively, only recording seven more kills over the final three sets. She led the Vulcans with 44 attack attempts which brought her hitting percentage all the way down to .114 when all was said and done.

Conversely, Biola's key players were able to turn it up a notch over the final few sets. Christina DenBoer and Karly Dantuma led the way with 18 kills and 13 kills, respectively, including a huge set-clinching kill from Dantuma to seal the third.

The third set is what really swung this match in the Eagles' favor and took all the wind out of the sails of the upstart Vulcans. Biola jumped out to a big early lead at 10-5, getting an awkward, off-balance kill from DenBoer to notch that 10th point and make it feel like everything was going to go in the Eagles' favor.

The Eagles' blockers were at the right place, at the right time for most of the night and a huge block helped BU bounce back after a short Hawaii Hilo run and extend its lead back to a comfortable margin at 14-9.

Things got dicey when UHH won eight out of 11 points to come all the way back and tie the game at 17. An ace and some kills from Bekah Roth and Karly Dantuma helped the Eagles overcome the stress of that situation a bit and open up a 22-19 advantage that forced a Hawaii Hilo timeout.

It turned out to be a well-timed timeout as the two teams would eventually end up knotted at 23 with the home team sending the crowd into a frenzy. An attack error from Beale put BU in the driver's seat by awarding them the next point, setting up a set point.

Then, after one UHH point, kills from DenBoer and Dantuma awarded Biola the swing set, 26-24.

After that it was smooth sailing for BU in the fourth. The Eagles won five of the first six points and never allowed Hawaii Hilo to tie or take the lead. The stretch that really helped Biola out was when four consecutive UHH attacks ended up going out recording points 18, 19, 20 and 21 for BU and putting the Eagles ahead 21-13.

A short UHH run made things a bit tense, but ultimately there was no stopping this Eagles' team on its quest to finish the trip 3-0 and get back to La Mirada with a chance to do some more damage.

The win makes it eight in a row for Biola. It's the Eagles' longest regular season winning streak since beginning the year with 15-straight wins in 2015.

"Everybody had to play well," said Seltzer. "We needed everybody to do their part to get the win. They did. Christina did good, Karly was phenomenal tonight. Sierra did her normal good things and Sami captained our defense. It was good. I am really proud."

Sami Hover led Biola's back row through a tough match with a lot of long rallies on Friday night. The sophomore libero ended the evening with 21 digs, her seventh time this season eclipsing 20 digs.

As mentioned, the Eagles blocking was phenomenal yet again. Sierra Bauder and Bekah Roth were of course right in the middle of that with seven blocks and six blocks, respectively. The Eagles recorded 13 total blocks, which more than doubled the output of their opponent.

DenBoer and Dantuma led the attack, while Bauder also chipped in nine kills and was second only to Dantuma with a .421 hitting percentage. Dantuma continued her hot streak by hitting .440. DenBoer came up one dig short of a double-double, recording nine to finish just behind Hover and Kaitlin O'Brien.

Biola will take a day to soak up its three victories by hitting the beach in Kona on Saturday. Then the Eagles fly home on Sunday and begin to prepare for a new week of challenges as they host Notre Dame de Namur (6-13, 5-6 PacWest) on Friday and play at Concordia Irvine on Saturday (7-14, 6-7 PacWest).

The Eagles are 16-5 (12-2 PacWest) after Friday's result. Their 14 matches played is the most in the PacWest at this point, with some teams only having 11 conference clashes under their belt.
