APU Wins First Meeting With Biola

Biola’s valiant effort was not enough to push No. 18 APU off its game.

AZUSA, Calif. --- If all the basketball games in the Cornerstone Cup could be this competitive, this rivalry is truly going to be awesome. Biola's effort ensured it was not going to be a one-sided game on Saturday, but the No. 18 Cougars played a solid game from start to finish in their 75-61 victory.

Azusa Pacific improves to 6-1 in the PacWest and 15-2 overall while the Eagles sit at 2-4 in the PacWest. The Cougars collected a total of 10 Cornerstone Cup points after the APU men's team squeaked out a win in the nightcap. The next meeting between APU and Biola will be on Feb. 3 in Chase Gym and you can read more about the scoring rules for the Cornerstone Cup here.

The Eagles play with a work rate that was fitting for a rivalry game like this and played on the Cougars level for the majority of the game. The game just hinged on the Cougars' ability to execute their game plan from start to finish. Biola had its share of really good stretches in periods two and three and even produced better shooting percentages from the field and from distance. But APU stayed solid and rebounded from every dry stretch to hold onto its lead.

One of the Eagles' best stretches came during their 24-point second period. After Azusa Pacific went on a brief 5-0 to begin the quarter, Danielle Kennedy buried a three to cap a 13-2 run for Biola to race back into the game and make it a three-point margin. Kennedy was a perfect 2-for-2 from deep in the first half and was one of four Eagles to score in double figures.

Tatum Brimley was 5-of-9 from the field for the second-straight game and paced the Eagles with 14 points.

APU sealed its win in the second half by taking control of the game in the key and playing good defense. The Cougars had 16 more rebounds than the Eagles in the final 20 minutes and went 12-for-13 from the charity stripe. Then they limited Biola to nine field goals and 25 points in the second half to dash the Eagles' hope of a comeback.

The Eagles will return to action next Thursday with another PacWest road contest. They visit Golden Gym to square off with the Point Loma Sea Lions at 5:30 p.m.
