Khaw Sparks Late Surge

Brenna Khaw scored nine points in the final quarter of Biola’s comeback win.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola's three wins in conference play have not come in the most conventional fashion, but boy have they been exciting to watch.

After erasing a 15-point deficit at Concordia on Dec. 9 and blowing Dixie State away in the fourth quarter on Jan. 3, the Eagles produced their most thrilling win to date with a 61-59 victory over Point Loma Nazarene University.

DeMoria White led the Eagles with 23 points and fittingly got the buckets that gave Biola the lead and preserved fifth win of the season. Point Loma drops to 4-5 in conference after BU limited the Sea Lions to just six points in the final quarter.

Biola needed every make and stop along the way after the home team raced ahead to a 14-point lead after the first quarter. But the Eagles created their own breaks with scrappy defense over the next 30 minutes that finally held the Sea Lions in check when it mattered most.

"In the second quarter we double our concentration and intensity and were fortunate to be able to climb back in the game," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "Jessica Shill and Kayla Macedo keyed the defense and Mori held the offense together."

Biola faced an 11-point deficit at halftime after scoring just 24 points in the first 20 minutes. But Nakamura's team buckled down in the second half to pull down 27 rebounds and to limit Point Loma to a 3-for-16 clip in the final 10 minutes.

Six Eagles pulled down at least four rebounds in the contest with White led the team in rebounding for the first time this season with eight.

While White eventually rolled to another great scoring night and sunk the final four points of the game for her team, the Eagles would not have won without the clutch shooting of Brenna Khaw in the fourth quarter. The guard from Camas, Washington went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the fourth and sank back-to-back threes midway through the period to pull Biola within two points. Khaw reached double figures for the first time since Dec. 30, 2015 with 12 points on 80 percent shooting from three.

The second half was hard fought," said Nakamura. "Jazz and Sara got things going and then we found Brenna with some great passes and she shot the ball with confidence. The game went down to the final second and we were fortunate to get one more stop. This was another great team win!"

Forwards Jazz Benn and Sara Dougan also found success handling the Sea Lions forwards and chasing their shooters to the three-point line. Each player had at least six points and six rebounds while combining for just one foul and zero turnovers.

The Eagles will hope to take this momentum into their next PacWest matchup in two days time. Biola begins its pursuit of the season sweep against Concordia when the game tips-off at 5:30 p.m. Chick-Fil-A at The La Habra Marketplace will be giving away free chicken sandwiches beginning at 5:15 p.m.
