Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars Claim Round 1

Biola battles to the bitter end, but comes up a few points short.

AZUSA, Calif. --- As every single one of these Biola-Azusa Pacific matchups have been in 2017-18, the first men's basketball meeting of the season was well worth the wait. The Eagles and Cougars battled in front of a Christmas break crowd of nearly 2,000 people and put in an instant classic, with the game ultimately going the way of Azusa Pacific, 82-76.

Trevor Treinen was the story of the night as the junior guard set a new career-high with 32 points and did all he possibly could to help the Eagles find a way to knock off the top team in the conference. The effort ultimately came up just short, but you cannot hide the fact that although this Biola Men's Basketball team is still winless in conference it is clear it can compete with anyone.

The Eagles came out of the gates strong and built as much as a nine-point lead at points in the first half. BU shot the ball far better than the Cougars from start-to-finish, but it was APU's +20 rebounding advantage that allowed APU to ultimately tie the game up just before halftime and work its way to victory over the final 20 minutes.

Biola's defense forced a bunch of awkward shots from the Cougars, who came into the night shooting 43 percent from the field. Tonight, APU made just 38 percent of what they shot but they were allotted 29 more attempts than the Eagles, which gave them some margin to miss a few.

The turning point in the contest was with just over one minute left in the game. Biola was trailing 73-68 at that point and just missed a layup under the basket. The ball bounced back to almost half-court where the ball was ultimately won back by Biola. A quick shot from outside swished straight through the net and seemingly brought the Eagles back within two at 73-71.

However, just after the ball went through the hoop the play was called off because the officials ruled the previous shot did not hit the rim, the shot clock should not have been reset and thus before the three was ever taken the shot clock "should have" expired.

So, instead APU took the ball back down the other way where Corey Langerveld hit a three to put the game seemingly out of reach and deflate the exhausted Biola offense.

Got to hand it to the Eagles still, because even facing an 11-point deficit with under a half-minute remaining they did all they could to bring the game back. Biola got a three from Treinen with 11 seconds left and stole the ball back immediately where Treinen stepped back to attempt another quick three. He was fouled and went to the line to shoot three with BU still at an 82-74 deficit. He made two of three to get to his final 32 points, but it ultimately was just a little too late.

Trenin's 32, Alex Talma's 11 and Isaiah Jones' 10 had them as the only Eagles in double-digits and the team's leading scorers. BU ended up shooting 52 percent for the game, but a 62 percent number for the free throw line hurt the effort a bit.

APU had four guys reach double-digits, including the Cougars' leading scorer Mandrell Worthy, who had 21. Each team had a guy record a double-double as Jones had 10 points, 12 rebounds and Azusa's Petar Kutlesic ended with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

This was one thrilling appetizer for the main course coming up at Biola on February 3. The two teams go head-to-head one more time with a scheduled 7:30 p.m. start that day. We will have 900 In-n-Out cheeseburgers to give out to fans, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in advance of the women's game.

Tonight's result pushes Azusa Pacific to 11-5 (7-1 PacWest) and drops Biola to 6-9 (0-7 PacWest). The Eagles have one more road contest before heading back home. BU faces Point Loma at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 11. After that Biola is back at Chase Gymnasium, hosting bitter rival Concordia-Irvine. We will have a few hundred free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in advance of that one on Jan. 13, so make plans to be there.
