Defense Makes The Trip To Utah

Clutch scoring and stellar defense lead to a victory at Dixie State.

ST. GEORGE, Utah --- After holding its opponent to just 36 points in a victory that closed the books on December, Biola started the new year with another stellar defensive effort and another win on Wednesday.

Biola pulled away from Dixie State with a 25-point second quarter and held the Trailblazers to 28 percent shooting to earn a 66-56 victory one day after making the flight to Utah. The win improves Biola record in PacWest games on the road to 2-2 while giving the Eagles their second victory in a row.

"This was a great team win for us," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "We have a lot of respect for Dixie State because they are tough, disciplined and well-coached. But we competed well from start to and finish tonight."

Nakamura's starting five collected 56 of the Eagles' 66 points in the game and scored 21 when Biola took the lead in the second quarter.

After starting the quarter at a 16-10 deficit, the Eagles turned the game around with extremely efficient shooting in the second period. Biola shot 66 percent on 12 shots, went 4-of-6 from deep and hit all five of its free throws in the second quarter for its 25 points. Dixie State only had five makes in 19 attempts over the same stretch, resulting in an eight-point lead for Biola at halftime.

The Eagles made sure the Trailblazers' shooting difficulties continued into the second half by staying active on defense. Dixie State went 1-of-15 from three in the second half and shot just 24 percent from the field while Biola had another 20-point period in the fourth to put the game away.

Senior DeMoria White chipped in 12 points in the second half to surpass 20 points for the fifth time this season. The Eagles starting forward, Jazz Benn, Sara Dougan and Mikayla Greens, all had good games with at least eight points and seven rebounds each. And Tatum Brimley came up with 10 points off the bench on 56 percent shooting.

"I always talk about the outstanding character of our team and the ladies showed it tonight with the way they stayed positive and unified when the going got tough," said Nakamura. "We have been preparing better and better over the last month and it's exciting to see the team enjoy some success on the scoreboard."

The Eagles return to California for a much-anticipated Cornerstore Cup rivalry game at Azusa Pacific on Saturday. Tip-off at the Felix Event Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Read more about what you need to know to attend here.
