Fouled Out

Biola gets called for its most fouls of the season and falls by four in Frisco.

January 29, 2018

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- Playing in Kezar Pavilion up in San Francisco for the first time Biola Men's Basketball gave the Art U Urban Knights all they could handle throughout the night, but ultimately came up a bit short in a 77-73 loss on Monday night.

The Eagles had to play behind the eight ball for most of the night as they were getting called tough by the officials and ended up with a season-high 24 fouls called on them. This led to the team's two starting forwards fouling out with still four minutes left in a tie game and gave Academy of Art the decided advantage for the rest of the game.

Biola trailed in the game from about the nine minute mark in the first half all the way until there was 11:32 left in the game. It was a Trevor Treinen layup that lifted Biola back on top. He had a night full of clutch shots that either put Biola ahead or closed a large gap to make the game competitive again.

That Biola lead would go up and down a bit over the next few minutes, but ultimately some solid shooting and timely takeaways helped Biola achieve its largest lead of the game at 60-55 with just under eight minutes to play.

They held onto the lead until some Urban Knights free throws at the 4:17 mark helped them move to a 67-65 lead that was never relinquished. A Treinen three cut it to as close as two points with 1:48 left on the clock, but BU could not get all the way over the hump.

Michael Bagatourian was the big story of the night as the freshman set a new career-high with 19 points on an impressive 6-of-7 shooting effort. He was also 7-of-7 from the free throw line. He was held scoreless over the final four minutes as he was forced to play out of position due to BU being shorthanded.

Biola was great from the stripe tonight in many fewer opportunities than ART U. The Eagles shot 89.5 percent from the line in their sixth consecutive 70 percent or better FT performance.

Blake Shannon, Jr. also got up into double-digits with 14 points. He had to work hard to get his points tonight as his shot was not falling as regularly as the senior stabilizer is accustomed too. He made just 4-of-15 from the floor, but made up for it with a perfect performance from the stripe.

Biola will forget this result quickly as their sites are now turned squarely onto Saturday's rivalry showdown with the 11-3 Azusa Pacific Cougars. The Eagles are seeking their third PacWest win and proved in the season's earlier matchup in Azusa that they are fully capable of competing with the Cougars.

The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off inside of Chase Gymnasium. It follows a women's game at 5:30 p.m. and a pregame "tailgate" featuring free In-n-Out starting at 4:30 p.m. All attendees need tickets for that game. See this page for ticketing info.
