Guards Bring The Win Home

Starting Guards DeMoria White and Tatum Brimley combine for 39 points in Biola’s win over Concordia.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles used every ounce of grit and composure under pressure to earn their first conference win at home on Saturday. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team played a nail-biter for the second-straight contest and fended off a last second shot from the Concordia Eagles to win, 67-66.

The victory completes Biola's season sweep of Concordia and continues the Eagles' string of positive results in conference play with three wins in their last four PacWest contests. Concordia is still 6-1 against everyone else in the conference and currently sits at a record of 9-6, 6-3 PacWest.

"We are emphasized preparing well, and competing well for 40 minutes, or more if necessary," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura.  "It was exciting to see us get off to a good start against a very tough, well-coached Concordia team and come out with a quality win."

Biola's push to its last second victory was led by starting guards Tatum Brimley and DeMoria White, who combined for 39 points and came up with the necessary buckets and free throws in crunch time.

Both guards' excellent play in the second half particularly was also crucial for Biola's result since the game rested at halftime with a flat-footed tie. After both sides scored 16 points in the first period and 17 points in the second, Concordia forced Biola to play catch-up by going an 8-1 run to start the third.

But Biola put in the work at both ends of the floor in the fourth quarter to score 24 points in the period and turn a three-point deficit into a one-point victory. Led by Sara Dougan, the Eagles forward created five second-chances with offensive rebounds and beat Concordia 10-to-6 on the glass in the final 10 minutes. Dougan grabbed three of those offensive boards and finished with a total of six for the sixth-straight contest.

Brimley and White also did their part in the fourth quarter with four steals and 11 points, respectively. They accounted for two-thirds in the scoring between the two of them and scored all five of Biola's points in the last 30 seconds.

"In the 4th quarter neither team was able to string together consecutive stops," said Nakamura. "Having two experienced ball-handlers like Mori and Tatum really gives our team confidence down the stretch. Unfortunately we could not put the game away because we missed too many free throws. But we defended the last play pretty well, and we were happy to survive their shot at the buzzer."

White finished with 23 points for the second time in three days while Brimley chipped in 16 points and six rebounds of her own.

Biola will welcome a non-conference opponent to Chase Gym on Wednesday in the Bethesda Flames before it returns to PacWest play next Saturday.
