Eagles Advance To Semifinals

Biola maintains it's No. 1 seed with undefeated pool play.

KISSIMMEE, Florida --- Your Biola Eagles will officially be playing on the final day of the 2017 National Christian College Athletic Association Volleyball season. Biola beat Emmanuel (Ga.) 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 25-17) on Friday night to close out pool play 4-0 and advance to the semifinals maintaining their No. 1 overall seed.

The Eagles won the first two sets convincingly before a brief setback in the third, but led by some strong efforts from Ally Forsberg, Brinley Beresford and others bounced back to seal things up in the fourth.

"I love the way this team battles through adversity," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "It was not the prettiest, cleanest or most well-executed match, but we keep finding a way to win."

Forsberg had two kills and a block and Beresford had three kills and 10 assists as they stepped up to lead Biola to its 25-17 final set win. The Eagles hit -.136 the set prior but bounced back with 13 kills and a .250 hitting percentage in that clinching game. Savannah Hilde and Karly Dantuma also had multiple kills in the final frame.

The Eagles and Lions played that final set close early in the set, with Biola taking its first lead at 6-5. The teams then traded points until finally a five-point run from BU put them ahead 12-7 and set the tone for the rest of the way.

Biola ended up winning by a buffer of eight thanks to a run of four-of-six points at the very end of the match. Things finished up when slammed home one of her eight kills of the match.

The Eagles hit just .121 for the match, mostly because they were held to just seven kills and made 13 attack errors in their 25-16 set three loss. That's their lowest hitting percentage of the tournament so far, which came as a surprise after they had a truly dominating first set hitting .342 with 18 kills.

Fortunately for BU Tess Van Grouw and the defense were on their toes all night long and held Emmanuel to just 29 kills in the entire match. The Eagles mustered up more digs than Emmanuel (65-56), despite the fact that Biola attacked 18 more times than the Lions and gave their back row more chances.

TVG led all players with 19 digs, she was followed by Beresford's 11 and Sami Hover's 10. Kaitlin O'Brien was right under double digits with eight digs. The Eagles were out-aced and out-blocked for the first time this tournament, but in the end it didn't matter as they bore down and got it done when it mattered most.

Beresford nearly got herself a triple-double in this one. The junior ended with six kills and hit nearly .500. She added 11 digs to that and led the team with her 39 assists. She's now got 18 kills, 107 assists and 27 digs for the tournament.

"I think we started out really strong and everybody was on," said Beresford. "Then we had a lot of hitting errors and hit a bit of a dip, but I am really excited we came back. We really came together at the end, which was awesome to see."

The win pushes Biola to 26-7 for the season. They will continue the tournament play in the semifinals at 7:00 a.m. PT on Saturday. The Eagles will play the No. 4 seed SAGU.
