Biola Bites Back At Sharks

The Eagles follow-up an upset loss in Hawaii with a win here at home.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The win train just keeps on chugging along for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's Biola Volleyball team. On Thursday evening the lades won their sixth match in a row and are now 5-0 to start their season-ending homestand.

Biola hosted Hawaii Pacific and got sweet revenge for a five set loss in Honolulu earlier this year by closing out the Sharks in four (25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 27-25) here at Chase Gymnasium.

It was a tight match throughout the night as the Sharks found a way to dig up a whole lot of the Eagles' attack attempts, allowing kills on just over one-third of Biola's swings for the evening. They were also able to counter with one of the most impressive individual performances by any individual player visiting Chase Gym this year. Freshman Cameryn Collie ended her night with 19 kills and 10 digs as she did her best to keep her team in the match.

In the end the Eagles' bevy of offensive weapons proved to be too much to handle, as evidenced with a rapid 25-16 win in set four and the ability to dig deep and come from behind to wrap up the match in the fourth set.

The Sharks had the first set point opportunity in the fourth set at 24-23, but a Collie service error allowed the Eagles to tie it at 24. Biola got the three points it needed to win the match courtesy a ball hit out by HPU, a kill from Sierra Bauder and a block by Bauder and brinley Beresford.

The Eagles were dangerous at the net all night long, dominating the block column with five stuffs compared to just six from the Sharks. Bauder added to her team-lead with seven blocks while Sabrina Winslow and Bekah Roth each had four.

Biola managed five aces on the evening, but committed six errors and had more trouble handling HPU's serves defensively, which is a big reason why the Sharks were able to steal the second set. That second set was also Hawaii Pacific's best set offensively as they managed 15 kills while limiting themselves to six errors to post a .237 hitting percentage. It was the only set in the match where they outhit BU. Even with a glistening 21 kill total in set four the Sharks ruined their opportunity to force a fifth because of 10 attack errors, four of which were Biola blocks.

Winslow was once again the leading attacker for the Eagles. She took 43 swings and came away with 14 kills. Those kills helped her move into first in the kills column for the Eagles in terms of season totals. She's now up over 260 for the year.

Bekah Roth was quiet "player of the game" though. The freshman middle managed 10 kills on just 13 swings (.769) to set a new Biola season-best for individual match hitting percentage. She held the team's previous best with a .579 number against Sonoma State. Roth also added four blocks and a dig to help the cause.

The win pushes the Eagles to 20-6 (13-4 PacWest). Hawaii Pacific falls to 7-18 (5-12 PacWest). It is Biola's 12th-consecutive 20-win season. Azusa Pacific also won this evening, so the two teams remain even at second place in the PacWest standings.

Biola's next match is Saturday evening at home against the team that's already clinched the conference title. The Eagles host the No. 2 California Baptist Lancers (25-0, 17-0 PacWest) at 7:00 p.m.
