Biola Red Beats Bluefield

Eagles earn their ninth 3-0 win of 2017 in NCCAA opener.

KISSIMMEE, Florida --- After a few days of waiting the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I Volleyball Tournament finally began for No. 1 seed Biola Volleyball. The Eagles opened up in a big way with a convincing three-set win (25-11, 25-20, 25-15) over the No. 9 seed Bluefield (Va.).

"I am excited we came out today prepared and ready to play," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "We jumped on them early and that really helps with confidence."

The Eagles had confidence and then some in the first set as they came out quick and dominated the 25-11 game. Biola won the first six rallies of the match and nine of the first 10 overall to position themselves well in the match from the outset.

The Eagles' attack was potent all match, but it was especially dangerous in that first set. The Eagles chalked up 17 kills and hit a match-best .424 while the defense held its opponents to just six kills and six errors.

Biola outhit Bluefield 51-23 for the match and ended with a .353 hitting percentage overall, which is the team's third-highest in a single match this season. The Eagles' 51 kills is a new season-best in a three-set match, besting tallies of 48 and 45 in BU's wins over Dixie State.

It was quite a fun match to witness as the Eagles got a chance to use every single healthy player on the bench and rotated players in and out frequently.

Freshman setter Vanessa Garcia played two of the three sets and was outstanding, raking in a team-best 28 assists and adding four kills of her own to help pace the offensive effort.

Sets two and three were a bit more competitive, but the match played out as you'd expect the No. 1 see and No. 9 seed match to go, with the Eagles only sweating just a bit in a tight 25-20 second set.

The Rams hit .333 and had their match-best 12 kills in the second game. Unfortunately for them the Eagles also had their match-best with 18 kills in the game.

Stephanie Jewett and Ally Forsberg was the other standout players in those final two sets. The junior right side, Jewett, came in and took four swings and earned kills on each and every one of them in a very impressive and efficient performance. Forsberg rocked for Biola in the middle, landing a season-best eight kills and hitting .583. She was also in on three of the Eagles' six blocks.

Blocking is the only area where Bluefield held a statistical advantage. The Rams had one more of those with seven, including five from one player.

The win improved Biola to 23-7 and gets the team off to a 1-0 start to NCCAA Championship Pool A Play. The Eagles have three more pool play games over the next two days, including a match with McMurry (23-7) at 3:00 p.m. PT on Thursday.
