It's Rivalry Week

Biola women's and men's soccer play pivotal road matches Wednesday in Azusa

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola women's and men's soccer join the fray for the Cornerstone Cup on Wednesday with evening matches at Azusa Pacific. Both matches are worth 10 points in the yearlong rivalry series between the two schools.

Wednesday's action will kickoff at 5:00 p.m. with the women's match, followed by the men's match at 7:30 p.m. These are the only regular-season matchups the women's and men's soccer program with play in 2017. Azusa Pacific currently holds a five-point lead in the race for the Cornerstone Cup but a total of 25 points are up for grabs this week with the volleyball teams squaring off at Chase Gym on Saturday.

Head Coach Erin Brunelle's team is coming off of two PacWest wins in which it scored five goals combined in the second half. The 6-1 Eagles have scored 14 goals on the season and sit four points behind the Cougars (3-3-1 Overall, 3-0-1 PacWest), who are at the top of the conference table.

Azusa Pacific has climbed into first place on the strength of its defense in conference matches. After starting the season with three losses, the Cougars allowed just one goal over the next three contests to rattle off two wins and a tie against PacWest opponents. The Cougars finally blinked in their most recent match when they surrendered two goals against Concordia Irvine in the second half before they scrambled for a golden-goal in overtime.

APU has scored at least one goal in the first half in all three of its victories and has a 1-2-1 in matches that have gone into overtime this season.

On the men's side, the Eagles have taken two very different paths to PacWest victories over the last two matches. Biola came out on top of a 1-0 defensive struggle against Notre Dame De Namur on Thursday with a goal late in the first half from PacWest Defender of the Week, Sammy McKay. But the Eagles needed to score five times in the second half on Saturday to stiff-arm the Dominican Penguins in a 5-3 shootout on Saturday.

The 3-4-1 Eagles (2-1 PacWest) will look to get their first road win of the season on Wednesday against a Cougars team that is 1-6-1 overall but 1-2-1 at home. Azusa Pacific biggest struggles have come in the offensive third, where it has scored a goal or less in five of its last six matches.

The Cougars lone win in PacWest play came against Hawaii Hilo (0-7 Overall) in a 3-1 victory on Sept. 26.

Admission to the Cougar Soccer Complex is $7 and is valid for both matches on Wednesday. The facility is located north of Foothill Boulevard at Cerritos Avenue on Azusa Pacific's West Campus and parking is available in Lot I.
