Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was an unconventional beginning to the 2017 Biola Softball season as for the second time in a row the Eagles' season-opening series was halted early because of an early sunset.
Â
Biola hosted La Sierra at Freedom Field on Friday afternoon for doubleheader. The first game was a 2-0 Golden Eagles victory and game two was suspended after the bottom of the fourth with Biola holding onto a 6-1 lead.
Â
The suspended game will be completed next Friday, Feb. 3 when the Eagles travel to La Sierra for a road doubleheader. It will resume exactly where it left off with the top of the fifth inning and play until the end of the seventh.
Â
Getting back to today's events...
Â
Game one was a good one with Biola's pitching staff and La Sierra's Sarai Camacho dueling it out. Camacho ultimately tossed a complete game shutout and got her team off to a positive start to the year.
Â
Kaile Chavez started the first game and went four scoreless innings of one-hit ball. She looked strong throughout her outing, only allowing three base runners as she matched Camacho stride for stride.
Â
Looking to mix things up Head Coach
Lorie Coleman brought in the freshman
Paula Damas beginning in the fifth inning. Damas began her first collegiate outing by giving up a leadoff single. Then two sacrifice bunts and a two-out single opened the game's scoring in favor of LSU.
Â
The Golden Eagles' second run came around in the top of the sixth as a one-out double brought around an unearned run and brought the game to its final resting place.
Â
Biola could only manage three hits in the first game, one from each Hormel sister and one from
Kayla Neff.
Â
The Eagles had chances to score in the sixth and seventh innings, but both times the opportunities fell by the wayside and Biola would fall to 0-1.
Â
Coleman made some major shifts to her lineup for the second game, most notably was inserting freshman
Jay Perez into the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Perez played center field and would go 2-for-2 with a run scored and a hit-by-pitch in the four innings that got played.
Â
Also inserted into the starting lineup was
Hailey Boyett,
Alexis Parker and Kirstin Gutierrez. Boyett would make a big impact with one RBI hit and one RBI walk. Parker also had a RBI single, and Gutierrez had a RBI walk.
Â
Kimmy Triolo got the game two start and was having a great outing when the game got paused. She allowed one hit and one run through the four innings of work and had the LSU hitters completely off balance with her high velocity.
The Eagles burned through two of La Sierra's pitchers as they were dominating the game when it was halted. Biola had six runs on nine hits and the visitors were just one run on one hit. Hopefully that hot streak will continue as the game picks up next week.
Â
Biola will host a special lighting ceremony and alumni game at Freedom Field tomorrow night. The festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and include a Chick-Fil-A dinner, a program and, of course, the game.
Â
The game will be broadcast live beginning at 6:30 p.m. at
