Golden Goal Bummer For The BUMS

Biola suffers a big setback with a 1-0 overtime loss at San Diego Christian.

Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Soccer is one of those sports that just leaves you scratching your head sometimes at the end of a match. On Saturday, on a hot one at Cuyamaca College No. 18 Biola Men's Soccer was left scratching its head big-time following a shocking double-overtime loss to San Diego Christian.

The Eagles had been pressuring the Hawks all game long, finding their way up the field in any number of ways and taking shot after shot after shot, but somehow could not even once find the back of the net.

On the other hand, San Diego Christian settled in defensively, did not press the issue on offense and seemed to be playing content to tie at zero from the word go.

However, in the seventh minute in second overtime with just three minutes left to play in the golden goal period a ball found its way past Igor Puglia on a corner kick opportunity to lead the Hawks to a major upset win.

"San Diego played well and created some decent chances of their own," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "We had the majority of the attack and plenty of opportunities to score but could not. Most of their best chances came from long throw-ins into a crowded box. One of those chances resulted in the corner kick that won the game."

The corner kick was not the Eagles' friend on this afternoon as BU had its own chances at the end of regulation to find a corner kick game-winner, four in the final two minutes to be exact, and could not get the ball to the back of the net.

Biola had just as many chances in the first half, as the team had four corner kick chances, compared to SDC's single chance late in the half. The Eagles were in possession and in their attacking half for almost all of the first 45 minutes, but could only direct two of their 11 shots on target.

The Eagles had to play without four of their traditional starters as they are still mending from some injuries. A lot of newcomers and young players were inserted into the game, especially in the first half, and made the most of it as Biola kept its foot firmly on the pedal.

Shot opportunities for both sides slowed way down as the game progressed into the second half. Biola had only three shots in the second 45 minutes, two from Leonardo Contreras and one from Kousei Mattox. Mattox's chance at goal was the best chance of the game for the Eagles as it came sandwiched between corner kick chances in the 90th minute.

Biola came storming out of the gates in the first overtime as Keaton Kerr broke through into some space and had a go at goal in just the second minute of the frame. Unfortunately for he and BU, SDC's keeper Zachary Satton came up with the save, one of his four in the match.

San Diego Christian went without a single shot in the full first overtime and then came out loud for the second golden goal period. The late-game pressure is what helped lift the Hawks to their first Golden State Athletic Conference victory of the season. They tested a seasoned Biola defense with three quick shots and heavy attacking pressure before setting up the game-winner.

"Despite the loss, several young players were asked to step into more prominent roles and did well," said Elkins. "We are feeling the growing pains, but we have to expect them."

Biola falls to 8-4 (3-3 GSAC) while the home team Hawks improve to 6-7 (1-4 GSAC). After a bye week next week the Eagles will look to right the ship on the road against Hope International on Tuesday Oct. 18. The Royals currently sit atop the GSAC table with a 10-0-2 (4-0 GSAC) record.
