HIGHLIGHTS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Arizona Christian got a fantastic performance from their pitcher in game one, the only problem was that Biola's staff was on point all day long, leading to a doubleheader sweep where the Eagles held the Firestorm scoreless.
Â
The opening game was a nail biter as the two starting pitchers dueled it out, holding both teams scoreless into the sixth inning.
Reba DePriest was in the circle for Biola and was lights out, taking a no-hit bid 5.2 innings and eventually tossing a complete game with 10 strikeouts.
She was matched up with Jackie Aguilar, who entered the day with a 10-5 record and had good enough stuff to keep the Eagles' bats tamed into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
"We knew we were going to have a tough time with this pitcher, so our plan was to ride Reba as long as we needed to until we could get some clutch hits," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman.
Â
Biola started to understand where Aguilar was coming from the third time through the order and logged three of their five hits in the opener in that sixth inning. It began with a
Brooke Madrid single. She was retired at second on a
Heather Hall fielder's choice, but then the Eagles got two runners on after
Selina Sherlin's single.
Â
This brought up
Kasey Hormel in a huge situation. The Eagles' left fielder already reached base twice on the day with a single and a hit-by-pitch. She took an 0-2 pitch straight down the right field line, right behind the first-baseman, to bring home the only two runs of the game and get a win for DePriest.
Â
"We keep putting Kasey in RBI spots, because she's done so well when runners are in scoring position, we can count on her," said Coleman.
Â
Hormel's two game-winning RBI bring her up to 26 runs batted in this season, second only to
Heather Hall.
Â
It was Hall who was making the noise in game two, getting the scoring started much earlier with a two-run blast over the fence in left-center. It was her team-best eighth of the season, and it was her first hit since March 7 against Hope International.
Â
The runs did not stop there, as the Eagles' offense really began to click against the Firestorm's second and third arms.
Â
Biola went off for 13 hits in the second game and tallied six runs while
Kimmy Triolo and
Terri Van Dagens combined to shutout ACU. Biola could have added much more to that run total, but its offense left eight runners on base in this one.
Â
Hall and
Selina Sherlin provided the pop in the night cap, combining to go 6-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sherlin's big hit was a double and Hall's was of course the first inning big fly.
Â
Bria Madrid also had a strong day at the dish, going 2-for-3 and using a fifth inning single to push across two runs which ultimately led to the 6-0 final score.
Â
This offense happened in support of a very strong first start of the season for Triolo. It was her 22
nd appearance of the season, but just her first start. You wouldn't have known that by the poise she showed in mowing down the ACU hitters over her six innings of two-hit ball.
Â
"She really stepped up to the plate and did well today," said Coleman. "It was a different combination than we were used to, but it worked."
Â
The two wins help No. 16 Biola improve to 24-10 (10-4 GSAC) and drop the Firestorm 21-11 (4-8 GSAC). Biola is back at the grind tomorrow at home, hosting No. 8 CSU San Marcos for two beginning at noon.
