Overtime Tally Postpones The Celebration

Biola had hopes of clinching the Golden State Athletic Conference title on Saturday, but an OT loss delays it.

Joey O'Keefe scored on a penalty kick to put Biola up 1-0, but the lead didn't hold.
Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- The seats at The Master's College's soccer field are sure to be worn down after fans of No. 23 Biola spent the entire 108 minutes of the match on the edge of the edge of them in anticipation of a goal that would clinch the Eagles' Golden State Athletic Conference title.

That sweet success was not in the cards this Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs got a game-winner in double-overtime to down No. 23 Biola 2-1 and hand the Eagles their first loss in GSAC play.

The golden goal came in the 108th minute as Joey Mikulas headed home a corner kick to finish the match in victorious fashion on The Master's College's senior day.

That goal was the second of two unanswered that the Mustangs were able to get after Biola opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Joey O'Keefe scored off a penalty kick attempt.

It seemed for a long time as if the senior captain's critical tally would be enough to win it for the Eagles, but the reigning GSAC Player of the Year, Humphrey Mahowa, flicked on a ball after a deflection in the box to tie the match in the 70th minute.

The final 20 minutes of regulation and the full 18 minutes of overtime were about as intense of a spell of soccer you could see as both teams threatened and each had at least one look at goal that stirred up a strong sense of hope in their fans.

O'Keefe was involved in two such plays in the overtime periods. One chance he had a strike from just inside the box on the near side and sent the ball sailing just a few feet above the crossbar, and the other was an open run behind the defense that looked promising but fell by the wayside as a pass in from Leo Contreras came with a bit too much zip on it.

Ultimately it was the Mustangs that got it done in the second overtime as their second shot of the period found the net just behind JT Addington and ended the Eagles' hopes on clinching the title on this day.

It was another classic battle between The Master's College and Biola, and is often the case between these two sides tempers ran a bit hot on each side. Seven yellow cards were issued on the afternoon including one to each side during overtime.

Shots and shots-on-goal were even in this matchup and relatively low on both sides as the teams put high pressure on the ball throughout in an effort to minimize the offense. The Master's College had the advantage in corner kicks, which ultimately helped them win the game in the latter stages.

The loss is Biola's first since Sept. 16 as it had won or tied each of the last eight outings. The Eagles move to 7-1-1 in GSAC play and still have a four-point advantage over second place Vanguard heading into the final week of the regular season.

Biola finishes off its regular season slate at Arizona Christian (2-10-1, 1-8 GSAC) on Oct. 31. A win clinches the GSAC title or a draw will also do the trick with at least one non-win from Vanguard (2 games left). A loss would also result in the title if Vanguard loses both games or loses one and ties one.
