Eagles Extend Lead With Huge Win Over Vanguard

Stephen Tanquary scored a 72nd-minute goal to put Biola ahead 1-0 and win the match.

Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. --- The No. 23 Biola Eagles took down the No. 6 Vanguard Lions on the Lions' home turf on Wednesday afternoon to extend its lead to seven points in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

It was a great game and there was also some great banter in the stands as Biola fans and the Biola Baseball team packed the bleachers and spent the entire match in cheering battles with the Vanguard contingent.

The senior captain Stephen Tanquary made the difference with the only goal of the contest as her buried one in the empty net after the Vanguard keeper made a poor decision in trying to cut off the Biola run.

The first half was all Vanguard when it came to time of possession, but a few offside calls and some errant shooting kept them off the board going into halftime.

Vanguard did actually have the ball in the back of the net 30 minutes in, but after the fans all jumped to their feet in elation the line judge put a damper on the celebration as he raised his flag to signal offside.

While the Eagles didn't possess the ball as much they made the most of the time they did have possession by putting more shots on goal and making Brandon Gomez make four saves to keep them off the board.

The second half was much more competitive as the two teams both had chances to change the score line from start to finish of the final 45 minutes. As the competition level rose so did the tempers. Vanguard ended the game with three yellow cards and a red card, all of them coming in the second half.

Two of those cautions came between the 60 and 70 minute mark, which left the Lions playing much more timid to avoid being cautioned more.

Their keeper was not so timid as her charged Tanquary to try and cutoff his run in the 72nd minute. That mistake led to a wide-open opportunity for the captain, who absolutely does not miss open opportunities. His third goal of the season gave Biola all the advantage it would need as JT Addington successfully fended off Vanguard's 13 shots and three shots-on-goal to keep the clean sheet.

With the win Biola improves to 11-3-1 (7-0-1 GSAC) and leads the GSAC with 22 points this season. The loss drops the Lions to 11-3 (5-2 GSAC). Vanguard is second in the conference with 15 points.

Biola continues its tough road trip to end the regular season with a 1:30 p.m. match at The Master's College this Saturday afternoon.
