Late Corner Shocks The Hawks

Biola wins its fifth-straight match and tightens its grip on the GSAC lead with a 4-3 win.

Joey O'Keefe's seventh score of the season helped Biola clinch a 4-3 win on the road.
Box Score SANTEE, Calif. --- It was a crazy one at San Diego Christian on Tuesday afternoon, but as it seems to have done just about all season long in 2015 it ended in Biola's favor after a last-second goal allowed the Eagles a 4-3 win.

Biola soared just above the Hawks thanks to a Joey O'Keefe tally with just 16 seconds left in regulation. The senior captain buried a corner kick served up by John Hanscom to make the one goal difference in this crucial Golden State Athletic Conference win.

The goal came on Biola's third corner kick try in a span of 26 seconds and was one of seven corner kick chances the Hawks allowed the Eagles in the final 45 minutes of the match.

Similar to the women's game just before theirs this outcome looked bleak throughout much of the beginning stages of the game as a Joseph Fortini goal in the 39th minute helped the Hawks open the scoring and get the only tally of the first 45 minutes.

Then, coming out of the halftime break, things just went crazy at the Santee Sport Complex as the two teams combined for six second half goals all coming in the 57th minute or later.

As he does often, Leo Contreras made a great individual effort to tie the score in the 57th minute after a throw-in was laid off to him by O'Keefe. He finished it to tie the game on Biola's first shot attempt of the new half.

He followed that up with another goal when he connected with one on the far left side of the box that was just too good for the keeper to stop. This came off a rebound of an attempt by Stephen Tanquary and was Contreras' second of the game and eighth of the season had Biola playing with a lead on the road with just 27 minutes to play, but the match was far from over.

Cristhian Aparicio must really enjoy playing against San Diego Christian as he collected the second goal of his Biola career just five minutes after Contreras' second conversion. Both of his goals have come this year and both against the Hawks. Aparicio's was the first of Biola's two goals off its second half corner kick attempts. He found the back of the net off a big bending kick in from Kousei Mattox.

As is often said a two-goal lead is the most dangerous in all of soccer, and San Diego Christian proved that with back-to-back late tallies to tie the game at three. The second score came in the 85th minute and had this game looking like it would need some added time to find a winner.

Then the three corner kick chances in the final minute happened and O'Keefe's finish made this one history as Biola improved to 9-3-1 (5-0-1 GSAC) with its fifth-straight victory. Biola has a four-point lead over No. 3 Vanguard in the GSAC standings and neither team plays again until Saturday.

The Eagles host Hope International on Oct. 17 at 4:30 p.m. for the final regular season home game of 2015. The game will be Biola's senior day and the first 75 students in attendance will receive customized Biola soccer scarves.
