Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- It was not a bright start for Biola, as the Eagles allowed two very quick first-half goals to the Hope International Royals. However, a dramatic second half resulted in a huge final minute game-tying goal from
Stephen Tanquary, before ultimately falling in overtime, 3-2.
Â
It becomes Biola's third loss in four games after not dropping a single match through the first month of the season. It was the Eagles' first overtime loss since 2011. They had won four straight. Â
After allowing goals on the Royals' first two shots of the game, Biola recovered nicely, taking care of nine of the remaining 10 Hope International shots.
Â
Its offense had a difficult time getting anything started in the offensive third, getting just three shots in the first half. That number more than doubled in the second half despite the Eagles having to play a man down because of a red card to
Stephen Campos at the 31-minute mark.
Â
Biola was not slow to get going in the second frame, putting up just one shot in the and finding twine as
Bent Bargfrede and
Joey O'Keefe connected inside the box in the 46
th minute. It was O'Keefe's fourth goal of the season and second straight match with a goal.
Â
Twelve more shots came during the second half as it worked its way into the final minute of regulation. Seven of those shots came in the final 10 minutes as the two teams struggled to be the first to score again.
Â
It was Biola who finally got an opportunity off a goalie deflection in the final minute and put it away to force overtime. Following a corner kick, one of eight in the game for the Eagles,
Joey O'Keefe put one toward the goal that got saved by a HIU defender and the deflection went straight to
Stephen Tanquary who converted the game-tying goal.
Â
Overtime was difficult as Biola just finished playing just about 60 minutes a man down and Hope International got the game-winner from Raul Pinon just nine minutes in.
Â
The Eagles fall to 4-3-1 (1-1 GSAC) and get another stab at conference play, and some home cooking, as they face Westmont (5-2-1, 2-0-1 GSAC).
