Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola received an early goal from freshman
Stephen Tanquary in the 12th minute and dominated much of the match, but had to hold on for a 1-0 victory over Arizona Christian University in a GSAC match on Thursday night at Al Barbour Field.
The Eagles improve to 6-3-1 on the season with the victory and move to 2-1-0 in conference play while dropping the Firestorm to 3-6-1 and to 0-3-0 in the GSAC.
The first-ever match between the now GSAC rivals proved to be one-sided through much of the contest with Biola striking first early on. Just over 11 minutes into the match,
Julio Cuevas made a great run down the left side and sent a low cross into the box where Tanquary met it with a header to the far post for the opening goal.
The Eagles continued to put up shot after shot in the first half, recording 13 in all, but could not find the back of the net. They kept up the assault in the second half, but great goalkeeping by the ACU netminder kept it a one-goal game. Joshua Chelpka recorded nine saves including six in the second half to keep his team in the match.
Arizona Christian picked up the pressure late and had at least one great chance to tie the game late. In the 69th minute, David Hernandez took a crack at the goal from about 25 yards out but it rattled off the cross bar and was cleared from danger.
Biola netminder
Joshua Crichton made just one save in the match to earn the cleansheet--his third of the year.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday with a big showdown at Westmont beginning at 12:00 p.m. Biola was upset in its last trip to Santa Barbara as--despite two Biola goals in the final six minutes of regulation--the Warriors stunned the Eagles 4-3 in overtime for one of their two conference wins.
