IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 18 Biola allowed a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the game lest than two minutes apart as No. 14 Concordia recorded a 2-0 victory in the GSAC opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon in Irvine.
Biola, ranked No. 18 in the latest NAIA National Poll, moves to 5-2-2 on the season and drops to 0-1-0 in GSAC play. Concordia improves to 7-1-0 overall and to 1-0-0 in conference action.
Throwing out the first 10 minutes of the contest, the two teams played an even game with both sides putting up a solid showing to be expected of two Top 20 teams. However, those first 10 minutes proved to be pivotal.
Concordia got on the board early with a goal in the eighth minute as Mike Sweeney scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-0. Less than two minutes later, William Prado scored his fifth of the year to make it 2-0.
Biola shook off the slow start and played well over the final 80 minutes of the contest. At the start of the second half, BIola came out firing and blasted three of its eight shots in the contest at the Concordia net all in the first five minutes. However, two went wide and one was saved by Concordia netminder William Whiddon.
Biola finished with eight shots to Concordia's 10, putting two on frame while Concordia put six of its shots on goal. Whiddon made a pair of saves to record the shutout while
Aaron Fenlason suffered the loss after allowing two goals but making four saves.
Biola returns home for its next match, hosting Hope International University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
