COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Despite dominating the second half and peppering the opposing goal with shots, Biola was unable to get the equalizer and lost 1-0 at No. 18 Vanguard in a GSAC match on Wednesday night.
The Eagles, who suffer their second-straight loss, fall to 6-9-1 on the season and to 4-5-0 in conference play. The Lions remain tied atop the conference standing with a 8-1-0 record and are 9-7-0 on the season.
Vanguard picked up its lone goal of the contest early on as Mario Merdzic fired a shot from 10 yards out off a nice cross from Kyle O'Brien just four minutes into the contest.
The Lions would keep up the pressure in the first half, but Biola turned it on in the second. The Eagles would completely dominate play and fired 11 shots at the Vanguard net in the final 45 minutes. While just one was on frame, numerous beat the keeper only to miss just wide.
Biola received a chance in the final 10 minutes as Vanguard's Adam Holstein was sent off after receiving his second yellow of the game, forcing the Lions to play a man down. But there would be no last-second magic for the Eagles this time.
Biola still sits in good position to make the GSAC Tournament, however. The Eagles currently sit in fifth place with 12 points heading into the final day of the regular season. With a victory and a few losses ahead of them, Biola could move as high as fourth and host an opening round match in the conference tournament.
The Eagles final regular-season contest is a home batle against The Master's College on Saturday (Oct. 30) at 7:00 p.m. Biola will honors its seniors in a special ceremony prior to the start of that match.
