BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore transfer Kennedy Chongo failed to waste any time netting his first goal as an Eagle, scoring on a breakaway in the 37th minute to lift Biola to a 1-0 win over Chapman University in a non-conference men's soccer match on Wednesday night.

Biola moves to 1-0-0 on the young season while dropping the Panthers to 1-1-0.

Chongo was playing in his first match since transferring from Trinity International University in Illinois and got the Eagles on the board in a hurry. He received a great pass from senior midfielder Nick Bautista, split a pair of Chapman defenders, then beat the goalkeeper to the far post with a quick shot to put Biola up 1-0.

From there, the Eagle defense took over, holding the Panthers to just three shots in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Higgins picked up the win and his first clean sheet of the season, making a pair of stops in the match.

Biola held an advantage in every statistical category, outshooing the Panthers 13-7 and recording a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Eagles had a number of great opportunities to stretch the lead to at least two goals, but came up empty each time. One of the best came in the 56th minute as junior Alex Honore got a great look on a corner kick, but his header rattled off the crossbar and was cleared away.

Despite being his first match with the Eagles, the goal was actually Chongo's third on the turf at Al Barbour Field. While playing with Trinity, the sophomore forward netted a goal against Biola and another against Vanguard during the 2007 Biola Classic tournament.

The Eagles return to action on Friday (Sept. 5) for another non-conference match, this time against Westminster College (Utah). Start time for that match will be at 4:00 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
