No. 3 Concordia Snaps No. 4 Biola's Winning Streak in Convincing Fashion

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola saw its 15-match winning-streak snapped at the hands of Concordia University on Saturday night as CUI pulled off a dominating 25-19, 25-14, 25-21 sweep in a GSAC battle between two NAIA Top-5 teams.

Concordia, which entered the match ranked No. 3 overall in the latest NAIA poll, runs its record to 15-2 overall and 5-2 in GSAC play. Biola, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA poll, suffers its first loss of the season and falls to 15-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

Concordia flat out dominated Biola from start to finish as CUI posted a .277 attack percentage and saw three players reach double-figures in kills. Leading the way was Stephanie Scheele, who had 13 kills and hit .357. Right behind was Traci Weamer with 12 followed by Cassie Ells with 10. Scheele added four blocks while Ells recorded three.

Biola received six kills and 10 digs from Jessica Buffum, though she finished the match with a .000 attack percentage. Overall Biola hit just .086 in the match, the lowest offensive output since the 2005 season.

Concordia got off to a strong start in the first set, running of seven-straight points to take a 14-5 lead. After Biola pulled to within six at 16-10, Concordia went on an 8-2 run to take a commanding 24-12 advantage. Biola narrowed the gap with a short run, but lost the first set 25-19.

Biola could not take the momentum from the end of the set into the second as Concordia jumped out to a commanding 12-2 lead and cruised to a 25-14 win.

In the third, the two teams stayed close through the first half of the set before Concordia broke a 12-12 tie with a 9-4 run. Biola would close the gap to two at 21-19, but Concordia simply exchanged points and help on for a 25-21 win.

Biola returns home for its next match, another big battle against No. 1 Fresno Pacific University on Tuesday, Sept. 30. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
