Talcott's 11 Kills Leads Biola to Sweep of San Diego Christian

Joy Talcott led the Eagles with 11 kills

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Freshman outside hitter Joy Talcott recorded 11 kills and posted a remarkable .611 attack percentage to lead Biola to a 25-17, 25-10, 25-23 win over San Diego Christian in a GSAC match on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the latest NAIA National Poll, remain perfect to start the season, running their record to 13-0 and 3-0 in GSAC play. The Hawks fall to 3-11 and are now 0-3 in the conference.

Talcott was nearly unstoppable, posting one of the best hitting nights by a Biola freshman in recent memory. She had 11 kills in 17 attacks without committing an error for a .611 attack percentage. She also added eight digs.

Biola got off to a bit of a sluggish start in the first set, struggling to break away from a tough San Diego Christian side. Leading 18-16 late in the set, the Eagles finally snapped out of the funk and rattled off six-straight points to take control.

The momentum continued into the second set where Biola rolled to an early 13-4 advantage and never looked back.

In the third set, the Hawks found a bit of a groove as the Eagles began to clear the bench and forced an exciting finish. The set saw 16 ties and six lead changes with San Diego Christian holding a late one-point lead at 23-22. But Talcott recorded back-to-back kills followed by a big kill from senior outside hitter Kelsey Mitchell to hang on for the close victory.

Mitchell finished with seven kills, two digs and a pair of assists while fellow senior outside hitter Maggie McGill recorded seven kills, three aces and two assists against her former team. Senior setter Christina Perkins added 23 assists, 10 digs and four aces.

The Eagles return to the court on Saturday (Sept. 20) with a trip down south to face No. 6 Point Loma Nazarene. It has not been a happy place for Biola as the Eagles have dropped their last 10 matches at PLNU dating back to the 1999 season.
