BOX SCORE
ALISO VIEJO, Calif. --- First-half headers by sophomores Jake Ravenscraft and Jared Fenlason led Biola to a 2-1 non-conference victory over Soka University on Friday night in Aliso Viejo.
The Eagles remain perfect to start the season, improving to 4-0-0 on the season while dropping Soka to 1-6-1 overall.
Biola dominated the match throughout, outshooting Soka 23-5, but were only able to score twice in the match. Ravenscraft netted the first goal of the match in the 35th minute, heading home a cross from sophomore Alex Honore to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Just seven minutes later, Marco Ruvalcaba sent a free kick into the box where Fenlason headed it past the goalie to make it a 2-0 Biola lead.
After pulling a number of its starters late in the second half, Soka was able to get on the board with a header of its own. The goal snapped Biola netminder Tyler Higgins' shutout streak at 447:52. The sophomore had not allowed a goal yet in 2008 after wrapping up the 2007 season with a shutout. The innocent looking shot also came off a free kick headed into the goal on an innocent looking shot.
The Eagles had numerous opportunites in the match, starting just 16 mintues into the contest when Derek Friehe was tripped up in the box and awarded a penalty kick. However, his spot kick was stopped by Soka keeper Tim Sasser and cleared by the defense.
Midway through the second half, senior Nick Bautista had two solid chances, one hitting off the post and the other missing just high in front of a wide-open net.
Biola returns to action on Monday (Sept. 15), hosting the Academy of Art in San Francisco, a first-year program new to the NCAA Division II level. The match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start on Al Barbour Field.
