RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Biola University dropped its opening game at the NAIA Region II Tournament, falling 5-1 to No. 2 Point Loma Nazarene University on Tuesday afternoon at John C. Funk Field in Riverside.
The Eagles drop to 25-24 on the season and falls into the loser's bracket where they will face Cal State San Marcos at 1:15 p.m. Point Loma Nazarene, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, improves to 42-7 and advances to face No. 1 Cal Baptist at 3:00 p.m.
Biola's Krista Johnson recorded two doubles in the game while Keena Levert went 2-for-3. The duo combined to give the Eagles an early lead as Johnson doubled and Levert drove her in with a single in the second.
However, the lead disappeared quickly as the Sea Lions scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take back the lead. PLNU then added three more runs in the fourth for the winning margin.
Biola starter Lyndsie Roberts lasted just 2-1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits before giving way to Erika Moyer. Moyer allowed three runs in 1-2/3 innings. Freshman Kristen Larson tossed the final two innings, allowing three hits but keeping the Sea Lions off the board.
Melissa Gomez recorded three hits in as many at bats, driving in two runs to lead the PLNU attack. She also allowed just one run on four hits over five innings to earn the win and improve to 15-3 on the season.
