Gebbers, Rotkowitz Lead Biola Past Cal State San Marcos, 5-3

Hawkins Gebbers went 3-for-5 to lead Biola

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Junior Hawkins Gebbers hit a solo home run in the seventh and junior Nick Rotkowitz added a solo shot in the ninth to lead Biola to 5-3 non-conference win over Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday afternoon at Mission Bay High School in San Diego.

The Eagles improve to 33-12 overall with their seventh-straight victory while snapping the Cougars nine-game winning-streak and dropping them to 19-15 on the season.

Gebbers and Rotkowitz combined to go 5-for-10 for the Eagles on the day, driving in four of the five runs. Gebbers, who was 0-for-9 in the doubleheader on Saturday, rebounded with a 3-for-5 performance while Rotkowitz extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a pair of hits in five at bats.

San Marcos three runs came via solo home runs as well, including one by Tristan Gale to lead off the second and give the Cougars and early 1-0 lead. Biola got one back in the third on an RBI ground out by Gebbers. The Eagles would add two more in the fifth on a Cougar error and an RBI double by Gebbers.

Gebbers recorded his third hit of the game in the seventh, driving a pitch over the left-centerfield fence to put the Eagles up 4-1.

CSUSM added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back home runs by Jackson Chapelone and Dane Ponciano.

Rotkowitz capped the scoring with a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning.

Things got a bit dicey in the ninth inning as freshman Tim Nolan came on with a runner at first and one out in the ninth. The Cougars managed to sneak a pair of balls through the infield for back-to-back singles to load the bases, but Nolan got a strike out and fly out to end the game. He earned his third save in as many games and seventh on the season.

Biola starter Brian Albert picked up the win to improve to 8-3 on the season. He allowed just three runs on seven hits while striking out five Cougars in the game.

Biola plays NCAA Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills in a single non-conference game on Wednesday (Apr. 23) at Toro Field in Carson beginning at 3:00 p.m.
