LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola University senior forward
Danny Jones and sophomore forward
Rocky Hampton have been named to the 2008 All-GSAC Team as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
The low-post tandem led Biola in scoring and finished in the top 15 in the conference in points per game and in the top five in rebounds per contest.
Jones, who also earned all-conference honors in 2007, wrapped up the regular season averaging 14.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per game to lead the Eagles in both categories. He also finished third in the conference in rebounding and fifth in scoring.
The senior from Imperial, Calif., recorded 15 double-doubles on the year and failed to reach double-digits in scoring on just three occasions. Jones scored a season-high 22 points and added 11 rebounds at Cal Baptist in a 77-70 loss to the Lancers, though his 17 points and 15 boards helped the Eagles upset then-No. 9 CBU in La Mirada in February.
Hampton has developed into another strong inside presence for Biola, recording 12 points and 8.3 points per game this season, ranking him 15th and fifth in the GSAC in each respective category. The sophomore from Lake Arrowhead, Calif., has added a touch of strong defense this year, leading the conference and ranking ninth in the NAIA with 2.0 blocked shots per contest.
Hampton scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting as Biola won 82-61 at Bethany University earlier this season. He and Jones teamed up on the game-winning basket in Monday's upset win over arch-rival and No. 15-ranked Azusa Pacific University. Jones found Hampton below the basket for an easy jumper with 1.9 seconds left to lift the Eagles to a 51-49 win over the Cougars. Hampton finished that game with 14 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Biola opens the 2008 GSAC Tournament on Thursday (Mar. 6), traveling to Irvine to face top-seed and regular season conference champs Concordia University at 7:30 p.m.
