GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Krista Johnson and Keena Levert hit their first home runs of the season to pace Biola to a 9-4 upset win over No. 3 Point Loma Nazarene University in the first game of a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Freedom Field in La Mirada.

The Eagles (16-16, 3-7 GSAC) dropped the second game of the twinbill by a score of 9-1 in six innings as the Sea Lions (26-6, 7-3 GSAC) pounded out 11 hits.

Biola got off to a quick start in the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by Levert. Sara Smith opened the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second base by Sarah Jensen. Jacqie Hudson then followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners. After a strikeout, Levert stepped up for her first at bat at home this season. Levert, who missed over a month with a leg injury, blasted the second pitch she saw over the right centerfield fence to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Point Loma responded in the top of the second inning with a four spot to retake the lead. The Sea Lions led off with back-to-back singles by Melissa Gomez and Kayla Luttmers. The two came around to score on a two-run double by Jill Schaefer. PLNU then took the lead on a long home run off the bat of catcher Allie Boeckelman.

But Biola tied the score in the bottom of the third on a one-out home run to dead center by Johnson to tie the game at 4-4.

The Eagles took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jensen started the rally with a one-out double followed by a single by Hudson. Johnson then broke the tie with a single up the middle to score Jensen, then stole second to put runners in scoring position with two outs. Erin DaSilva then came through with a clutch single to right field to make it 6-4.

Biola then broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gandy got things started with an infield single. Smith then followed with a single to right and Jensen drove in the first run with a run-scoring single up the middle. Johnson then drove home the two runners with a double to the leftfield wall to make it 9-4.

Biola starter Lyndsie Roberts went the distance for the Eagles, settling down after the four-run second inning. She allowed just two hits the rest of the way and struck out three to improve to 7-3 on the season.

The nine runs were the most allowed by Point Loma Nazarene in a single game this season. The Sea Lions, which entered the game with a GSAC-best 0.77 ERA as a team, surrendered nine earned runs, the most since losing 7-6 to NCAA Division III St. Thomas (Minn.) two weeks ago.

The Sea Lions blew open the second game early with six runs in the second inning to make it 7-0 after just one and one-half innings. Biola would add a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-groundout by Lauren Gandy.

But that would be it for the Eagles after that. Point Loma's Paige Powell hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning as the Sea Lions won 9-1 in six due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Johnson finished the doubleheader going 4-for-7 with the home run, a double and three RBIs. Jensen went 3-for-6 with two runs scored while Hudson was 3-for-7 on the day.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 1) for a GSAC game at Hope International University at 4:00 p.m.
