LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola University completed a sweep of a two-game, non-conference series against Patten University with a 10-5 win on Saturday afternoon at Eagles Diamond in La Mirada.
Biola improves to 17-8 while Patten falls to 3-27 on the season.
The Eagles had just eight hits in the game and took advantage of seven walks by the Lions' pitching staff. Biola again jumped in front early with six runs in the first inning a day after scoring 11 in its first at bat. In the first, Biola drew a pair of walk to drive in its first few runs, then Brent Chavez cleared the bases with a two-run double to put the Eagles up 6-0.
Patten would score its first run in the top of the second inning on three-straight singles to make it 6-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Biola added another run without recording a hit. Hawkins Gebbers drew a leadoff walk to start the inning followed by Kris Cook being hit by a pitch and Tavish O'Keefe drawing a walk to load the bases. Matt McQueen then drove in a run with an RBI-groundout making it 7-1.
Biola would send eight men to the plate and add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Chad Pace led the inning off with a double and reached third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Chris Foreman, Nick Rotkowitz hit a sacrifice fly to plate Pace. Gebbers then hit a single through the leftside of the infield followed by an RBI-single to left by Cook. David West then drove home the final Eagles' run with an RBI-double to left.
Patten would add four runs in the top of the eighth, taking advantage of a few errors by the Eagles.
Jimmy Johnson earned the win for Biola, allowing just one run on seven hits over 5-1/3 innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. Steve Enriquez suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1.
The Eagles earn a sweep in the brief two-game series against the Lions after winning 11-2 on Friday.
Biola begins a five-game road trip on Monday (Mar. 24), traveling up to the Bay area for a game against Bethany University in Scotts Valley, Calif. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
