No. 4 Vanguard Holds Off Eagles, 91-75

Summer Matthews led the Eagles with 19 points on the night

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Despite shooting nearly 65 percent in the second-half, Biola was unable to recover from an early Vanguard run, falling 91-75 to the No. 4-ranked Lions in a GSAC game on Saturday at Chase Gymnasium in La Mirada.

The Eagles fall to 9-20 on the season and 6-13 in GSAC play while Vanguard moves to 21-4 and 17-2 in conference.

Biola was led by junior forward Summer Matthews, who scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting with senior guard Mandi England adding 15 points thanks to five three-pointers. Junior forward Megann Alberts added 11 points and six assists for the Eagles.

Biola got off to a good start in the contest, trailing by just one at 8-7 as Matthews hit a running jumper just under three minutes in. However, the Eagles would go the next six minutes without a basket as they spotted the Lions a 20-point lead at 27-7 with 11:29 to play in the half. Jessica Richter, the defending NAIA Player of the Year, keyed the run, scoring the final eight points–just one shy of the total she scored when the teams last met in Costa Mesa.

Biola would pull the score back to within 15 on a number of occasions in the half, but went to halftime trailing 46-24. in the second half, the Eagles continued to go back-and-forth with the Lions. However, they were unable to pull closer than 14 in the second half despite shooting 64.5 percent (20-of-31).

Vanguard received 27 points and 13 boards from Richter. Lauren Gregory added 24 points for the Lions while Sarah Boyd contributed 15.

Biola wraps up the regular season on Monday (Mar. 3) against its arch-rival Azusa Pacific University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. and the game is completely sold out!
