Biola Sweeps Bethany in Home Opener

Krista Johnson recorded six hits in six at-bats
LA MIRADA, Calif. — Sophomore Krista Johnson had a perfect 6-for-6 day and drove in five runs as Biola swept its home-opening doubleheader against Bethany University, winning 10-0 and 9-1 in a pair of non-conference games on Thursday afternoon at Freedom Field in La Mirada.

The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season with the wins while the Bruins fall to 1-2 overall.

Biola collected a total of 19 runs on 24 hits on the afternoon while allowing just a single run on six hits. Sophomore Emily Gray (1-0) allowed just two hits over five innings, striking out four to win the first game. Freshman Lyndsie Roberts (2-0) followed that with a four-hit, one-run performance to win game two.

Johnson was unstoppable for the Eagles, collecting six hits in as many at-bats, recording three doubles, five RBIs, four runs and added a stolen base for good measure. Freshman Lauren Gandy going 5-for-7 with four runs scored and three stolen bases.

Biola jumped out to a quick lead with six runs in the first inning thanks to three doubles and two singles in the frame. The Eagles added three additional runs in the third with the big blow coming from senior Sarah Jensen, who drove in two on a triple to deep right field. Jensen finished the day going 3-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs scored.

The Eagles capped the scoring in the fourth inning as Kacie Lyding drove home Johnson with a double to deep centerfield.

In game two, Biola plated two runs in the first taking advantage of some Bethany errors. The Bruins added a run in the third as Devan Cox drove home a run with a single. However, the Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning with Johnson driving in one with a double, then scoring on a single by Erin DaSilva.

Johnson plated two more runs in the fourth with a single to put Biola up 6-1. The Eagles wrapped the game up with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning starting with back-to-back doubles by DaSilva and Lyding. Three batters later, Jensen ended the game with a double to plate Lyding and Brittany Bury.

Biola returns to action in a week with a trip to the Bay area to face NCAA Division II foes San Francisco State on Monday (Feb. 18) and Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday (Feb. 19).
