Biola Stuns No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene, 85-62

Marlon King had 17 points to lead the Eagles to the upset

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — All five of Biola's starters scored in double-figures led by the 17 points from sophomore Marlon King as the Eagles pulled of a major upset, beating No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene 85-62 in a GSAC game at Golden Gymnasium in San Diego on Thursday night.

The Eagles improve to 14-9 on the season and 6-7 in GSAC play with their fourth win in their last five games. Point Loma, which was ranked No. 10 in the latest NAIA National Poll, drops to 17-5 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

King had a great night in his return to his hometown of San Diego, scoring 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, adding four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Forwards Danny Campbell and Rocky Hampton each added 16 points for Biola, which shot better than 55 percent from the field for the second straight game.

The Eagles came out firing in the first half, breaking a 12-12 tie with a 9-0 run to take a 21-12 lead at the midway point of the first half. After exchanging points over the next four minutes, Biola extended its lead to 16 at 35-19 with a 9-1 run and took a 42-27 lead to the half. The Eagles were able to take advantage of 11 PLNU turnovers, turning them into 14 points in the half.

Biola extended the lead to 20 at 48-28 on a jumper by King 1:33 into the second half. Point Loma pulled to within 12 on four different occasions, the last coming at 64-52 with 8:33 to play. However, Campbell followed that with a three-pointer to make it 67-52 and the Eagles would not look back.

Biola shot 56 percent in the game (33-for-59) while holding Point Loma to 37 percent shooting in the game. The Eagles also held a 37-28 edge on the boards and outscored the Sea Lions 28-6 in the paint.

Larry Tieu and Danny Jones each scored 11 points to round out the five Biola starters in double-figures while Andrew Schroeder added nine points off the bench.

Point Loma was led by Casey Ortiz, who scored a game-high 19 points while Josh Sanderson added 12 points and had three assists and three steals.

It was the first home GSAC loss for Point Loma this season and snapped a nine-game conference home winning streak for the Sea Lions. Biola–which had lost six-straight to PLNU–exacted a measure of revenge after blowing a late 11-point lead and falling 63-59 to the Sea Lions when the teams met earlier this season in La Mirada.

Combined with its blowout win over Hope International on Tuesday, Biola has outscored its last two opponents 170-91.

The Eagles continue on their brief two-game road trip, traveling to Santa Clarita for a GSAC game against The Master's College on Tuesday (Feb. 12) at 7:30 p.m.
