SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Ryan Zamroz drained a deep three-pointer with 54 seconds left in overtime to give The Master's a 62-56 win over Biola in a Golden State Athletic Conference game on Tuesday night at Bross Gymnasium in Santa Clarita.
The loss snaps the Eagles three-game winning streak and drops them to 14-10 on the season and 6-8 in GSAC play. The Mustangs improve to 11-13 and are now tied with Biola at 6-8 in conference play.
Biola was led by the 20 points of Danny Campbell, who hit six three-pointers and added a pair of free throws. However, the Eagles suffered from the field, shooting a season-low 33 percent including hitting just 36 percent in the second half and 17 percent in overtime.
Zamroz led the Master's with 19 points including five in overtime while his brother Brett Zamroz added 12 points off the bench. Erik Durso recorded his 12th double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 boards.
Biola got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 19-7 lead early on. However, the Master's responded with a small run of its own to close the gap to three and trailed by just five at the half.
In the second half, Biola was able to maintain its slim lead until late when a three-pointer by Erik Durso began a 7-0 run to give the Mustangs a five-point lead with 3:41 to play. However, the layup by Jeremy Haggarty would be the final field goal in regulation for The Master's.
Biola cut the lead to two with 2:48 to play on a Rocky Hampton layup, but were unable to get any closer until Danny Jones hit a layup with 30 seconds left to tie the game at 49-49. The Master's had two final chances in regulation but Haggarty's three point attempt was off the mark and a last-second inbound play was tipped away by the Eagles.
In the overtime period, the Mustangs struck first with a jumper by Ryan Zamroz, then after a missed layup by Hampton, Brett Zamroz hit a jumper to extend the lead to four with 1:40 to play. Marlon King hit one of two free throws on the other end, but Ryan Zamroz sealed the deal with his three-pointer with 54 seconds to play.
Campbell hit a pair of three-pointers of his own in the dying second of the game, but the Mustangs hit all six of their free throw attempts in overtime after making just 1-of-4 in regulation to hang on for the victory.
Biola also receive 11 points each from Danny Jones and Hampton with Jones adding 13 points and four assists.
The loss drops the Eagles to a tie with the Master's for eighth place in the GSAC, though the Mustangs hold the tiebreaker advantage with its win over Concordia earlier this season.
Biola looks to get back in the win column on Saturday, Feb. 16, as it welcomes No. 16 Cal Baptist into Chase Gymnasium. The Lancers moved back into first place in the GSAC thanks to a two-point win over Point Loma and a Concordia loss.
