BOX SCORE
IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola surrendered three second-half goals and fell to Concordia University 4-1 in the first round of the GSAC playoffs on Wednesday afternoon in Irvine.
The loss ends Biola's season as the seventh-seeded Eagles wrap up the year with an 8-7-2 overall record. Concordia, the tournament's No. 2 seed, improves to 12-5-1 on the season and advances to the GSAC semifinals to face No. 6 Westmont on Saturday.
Biola got off to a great start, creating a number of great opportunities in the first half. The first chance came early on as sophomore forward
Kennedy Chongo broke past the defense and beat the keeper, but chipped a shot wide of the net.
In the 18th minute, Concordia responded with a quick attack as Eric Mendoza found Kyle Hollomon with a nice pass which Hollomon finished from the left hand side about 18 yards out.
About 20 minutes later, Jake Ravenscraft had two great shots on net but both ended in unlucky fashion. The first blast beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by the Concordia defender. The ball bounced around a bit and came right back to Ravenscraft who went high this time. However, the ball hit off the crossbar, bounced down off the line and came back out.
Biola would respond just before the half with a goal to tie the score. Ravenscraft did a great job bring the ball down the far side. He then sent a cross into the box where it found the head of
Marco Ruvalcaba, who sent it past the Concordia keeper to knot the score at 1-1.
However, Concordia came out firing in the second, outshooting Biola 8-2 and scoring three goals. The first came in the 50th minute as Jon Fahey shot from about 25 yards out and curled it right into the upper V on the far side.
CUI would add another goal just 11 minutes later as Jeff Clark blasted a shot into the net from about 15 yards away. The home side wrapped up the scoring in the 79th minute as Jon Carlson dribbled from about midfield, beating numerous defenders and crcking a shot from just inside the box to make it 4-1.
Despite the four goals, freshman goalkeeper
Aaron Fenlason continued to play well in net, making seven saves on the afternoon. Two of those four goals allowed were impressive shots which only the top goalies in the country would have had a chance at stopping.
Biola hopes to be back in the playoff picture in 2009 as the team returns all but two of its players from this year's sqaud including its top two scorers and both goalkeepers.
