Biola Downs Point Loma 3-2

Kennedy Chongo had the first goal for Biola en route to the win

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Another impressive goal by sophomore Kennedy Chongo and a pair of penalty kicks proved to be just enough for Biola to hold of Point Loma Nazarene University in a GSAC match on Saturday night in La Mirada.

The Eagles snap a three-match winless streak with the victory and improve to 6-2-1 on the season and pick up their first conference win to move to 1-1-1 in the GSAC. The Sea Lions drop to 4-5-1 on the season and are 0-2-0 in conference action.

The Sea Lions got off to a quick start with a goal in the sixth minute, taking advantage of a strong forward push in the match's first 10 minutes. Jason Smith scored on a scramble in the box, sliding a loose ball past the Biola keeper to go up 1-0 early in the match.

The Eagles pulled even with a goal in the 35th minute on a nifty goal by Chongo. Senior Nick Bautista got the play sending a free kick into the box. Jake Ravenscraft slammed the ball at the goal only to have it bounce off the post and ricochet right to Chongo, who headed it into the empty net.

Just four minutes later, a Biola attacker broke free from the PLNU backline, but was pulled down by the final defender in the box leading to a penalty kick. Bautista stepped up and put it into the Sea Lion net to give Biola a 2-1 lead.

In the 54th minute, another Eagle attacker was hauled down from behind in the box after a one-on-one break leading to yet another penalty kick. This time, senior Brandon Gonzalez had the honor, tapping the shot into the net past the sprawling keeper.

Point Loma closed the gap to one with a one-on-one break of its own as Erick Melendez beat the Biola defense and scored in the 63rd minute. But that would be it for the Sea Lions as the Eagle defense clamped down and held on for the win.

Biola returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 8), traveling to Fresno to face No. 2 Fresno Pacific at 7:00 p.m.
