Biola Falls 2-1 in Overtime to No. 21 Concordia

Marco Ruvalcaba Netted Biola's Goal in the Match

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Jon Carlson scored on a breakaway four minutes into overtime as No. 21 Concordia defeated Biola 2-1 in a GSAC match on Saturday night.

Biola falls to 6-4-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in GSAC play while Concordia improves to 7-4-1 and 4-1-0 in the conference.

Both teams engaged in a thriller in front of an overflow crowd of over 500 people at Al Barbour Field. However, the excitement quickly shifted to Concordia's side as the visitor's got on the board with a goal just two minutes in. A free kick into the box found the head of Joel Smith, who sent it to the lower right corner to give CUI an early 1-0 lead.

Biola had a tough time getting its offense going as Concordia peppered the Biola net with seven shots in the first half. Biola finally got on the board in the 40th minute as freshman Marco Ruvalcaba slipped a ball into the right side of the goal past the Concordia keeper to knot the score at 1-1. For Ruvalcaba, it was his fourth goal of the year.

Biola managed to take control offensively the second half, but couldn't get on the board despite outshooting Concordia 8-4. The home side had its best chance to score in the final minutes of regulation. Biola had three straight shots including a pair at an empty net, but Concordia defenders came flying out of no where to stop the shots and eventually clear the ball from danger.

In overtime, Concordia was able to net the Golden Goal as a long ball found a pair of CUI forwards on the attack. Biola was able to dispossess the first attacker, but Carlson swooped in and picked up the loose ball, sending it past Biola netminder Tyler Higgins to give Concordia the win.

Higgins made six saves to keep Biola in the contest while Concordia goalkeeper James Rammelsberg recorded two in the win.

Biola has hit the skids going 1-4-1 after starting the season with five-straight wins.

Biola travels to Fullerton on Tuesday (Oct. 14) to face Hope International in a GSAC match at 3:00 p.m.
