Reinecke Scores Twice as Biola Beats No. 22 Vanguard 2-1 in OT

Kahlie Reinecke scored both goals to lead the Eagles

BOX SCORE

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Junior midfielder Kahlie Reinecke scored both goals to lead Biola to a 2-1 double-overtime upset win over No. 22 Vanguard University in a GSAC match on Wednesday night.

The Eagles improve to 5-2-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference play while dropping the Lions to 5-2-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the GSAC.

Reinecke has had the hot foot lately for the Eagles, scoring three of their last four goals and assisting on the other. Tonight, she had just two shots, but made them both count.

Vanguard seemed to control the match on offense throughout, outshooting Biola 25-6 in the match. The Lions even got on the board first, scoring just 2:19 seconds into the match as Karri Currier won a scramble in the box after a corner kick and scored from close range.

But Biola made the most of their few opportunities, including a chance on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 13th minute. Reinecke stepped up to take the kick and blasted a shot past the Lions' keeper to knot the score at 1-1.

The Lions continued their frantic pace, firing shot after shot at the Biola net. Currier alone would finish the night with a remarkable 15 shots, though she put just five of them on frame.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the second half, thanks in large part to the stellar play of Biola goalkeeper Lauren Gregston. The sophomore made six saves in the second half while facing 12 shots from the Lions to keep her team in the match.

Biola began to have some luck offensively in the first overtime, forcing a pair of corner kicks and recording a late shot on goal by senior Brittany Neill which just missed wide.

In the second overtime, Reinecke struck again, sending a long shot toward the goal that deflected off the keeper and in to give the Eagles the golden goal victory.

Gregston finished the match with 10 saves while facing 25 shots to earn her second-straight win.

The match was the fourth straight overtime match between these two schools with Biola now winning three of those with the other ending in a draw. Biola is 4-0-1 against Vanguard in its last five matches.

It was also the third match in the last five days for Biola which had not played a match in the previous 28 days. The Eagles will play their fourth match in eight days on Saturday (Oct. 4), hosting No. 12 Point Loma Nazarene at Al Barbour Field at 4:30 p.m.
