LA MIRADA, Calif. — Junior Derek Dietzen tossed seven shutout innings and senior Kris Cook recorded three hits and drove in three runs as Biola opened the 2008 season with a 13-0 win over Simpson University in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon .

Dietzen was masterful for the Eagles (1-0), allowing just three hits and two walks over seven innings and striking out six to earn his first victory of the season. He retired the first 11 batters of the game before allowing a baserunner on a slow single up the middle.

Biola's offense provided all the run support Dietzen would need, pounding out 14 hits on the afternoon. Cook opened the season with a bang, going 3-for-4 on the afternoon with a double and triple, scoring two runs and driving in three.

Sophomore catcher Daniel Bodemer went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI and senior first baseman Matt McQueen reached base in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Biola got things going quickly with a four-spot in the first inning. Cook had the big blow, driving in a pair with a double to left-center field. Freshman Chad Pace followed that up with a single to plate Cook and cap the scoring in the inning.

The Eagles scored an unearned run in the second and plated another on a wild pitch in the third. In the fourth, Biola scored two more as junior David West had a run-scoring double and Cook drove in freshman Brent Chavez with a triple.

After adding another unearned run in the fifth, the Eagles capped the scoring with a four-run seventh, batting around for the second time in the game.

Biola returns to action on Friday (Feb. 1), hosting the University of La Verne in the first game of a home-and-home series. First pitch at Eagles Diamond is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
