LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola saw two additional swimmers earn national qualifying times to help the Eagles to a dual meet sweep over Chapman University on Saturday morning at Lansing Pool in La Mirada.
Biola defeated the Cougars in both parts of the dual, winning 135-60 on the women's side and 93-68 on the men's side.
Senior Elena Fernandez punched her ticket to the NAIA Championships at the end of February with a 2:40.85 in the 200 Breaststroke time trial. Sophomore Brian Shepard also earned a spot in the national championships, recording a 22.58 on the lead leg of the 200 free relay. That brings the total number of NAIA qualfiers to 16 for Biola.
Freshman April Smith continued to dominate on the women's side, easily winning the 200 IM (2:19.75) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.50). In addition, she also swam the breaststroke leg of the 400 IM Relay team which placed first for the Eagles.
Five other swimmers swam to first place finishes for Biola, as the Eagles won nine of the 11 events.
On the men's side, Paul Mendoza, Zach Perkins and Ben Oviedo each won a pair of events as Biola exacted a bit of revenge after losing to Chapman during a quad-dual meet at Cal Baptist two weeks ago.
The dual meet was the final one of the regular season as the Eagles now prepare for the conference and NAIA Championships. The Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference championships are first up and run Feb. 13-16 at Olympic Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
