Mendoza Shatters 400 IM Record as Biola Swims at Fresno Pacific

FRESNO, Calif. — Paul Mendoza continued to make waves in his first season with the Biola University men's swimming team, breaking the school record in the 400 IM to pace the Eagles in a double-dual meet at Fresno Pacific University on Saturday afternoon.

Biola's women's team split the double-duals, edging out Concordia University 150-60 but falling to Fresno Pacific 157-111.

On the men's side, Biola dropped both duals as Concordia edged 103-99 and losing 192-58 to host Fresno Pacific.

Mendoza won the 400 IM with time of 4:24.61, breaking the old mark held by teammate Ben Oviedo by nearly five seconds. Mendoza also placed first in the 1,000 Free with a time of 10:02.94 and placed second in the 500 at 4:56.79.

Oviedo took top honors in the 200 Fly, knocking a second off his best time of the season and finishing in 2:03.23. He also placed second in the 100 Fly in a 53.51.

For the women, freshman April Smith won a pair of events, taking the 200 Free in 2:02.19 and the 200 Breaststroke in 2:33.17. In addition, she swam an impressive 4:54.76 in an exhibition heat of the 400 IM, adding another qualifiying time to her impressive first season.

Junior Christina Piakak took first in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:23.50 and was second in the 100 fly in 1:03.54.

Biola closes out the dual meet portion of its schedule on Saturday (Jan. 26) as it hosts NCAA Division III Chapman University in La Mirada at 10:00 a.m.
