Danny Jones had 22 points and 11 board for the Eagles

BOX SCORE

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Despite a 22-point, 11-rebound performance from senior Danny Jones and a great shooting night–hitting over 48-percent from the field–Biola was unable to pull off a big upset, losing to No. 15 California Baptist University 68-61 in a GSAC game on Saturday night at Van Dyne Gymnasium in Riverside.

The loss snapped a four-game winning-streak for the Eagles (10-5, 2-3 GSAC) and was just the second loss in nine game for Biola. The Lancers, who dropped their first game of the year at Point Loma on Tuesday, improve to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in conference action.

California Baptist struck first in the contest, jumping out to a 10-2 lead just over four minutes in. Biola quickly closed the gap to two and tied the game at 20-20 with 5:55 to go before halftime.

The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the half and into the second period with neither team able to take a sizeable lead. The Lancers held a 59-54 edge with 5:55 to go of a layup by Carl Ross. Nearly three minutes passed with the score the same before Jones was fouled on a putback and completed the three-point play with a free throw.

However, that would be the closest the Eagles would get down the stretch as Ross put Cal Baptist back up by four with a layup on the ensuing possession and the Lancers were able to hit free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.

Matt Gonzalez led Cal Baptist with 19 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out late in the contest. Mark Roussin added 16 points and 13 boards while Dave Cernin scored 15 points.

For the Eagles, Rocky Hampton and Marlon King each scored 14 points with Hampton adding 10 rebounds.

Biola's travels to Westmont on Tuesday (Jan. 15) for a GSAC game. It will be more than a typical contest, however, as it will be the 1,000th game coached by Head Coach Dave Holmquist.
