Eagles Sweep Grand Canyon

Jeff Nelson swam a career-best in the 200 back

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola won 15 of the 22 events and added a number of new NAIA Qualifiers to its ranks, defeating Grand Canyon University in a dual meet on Friday afternoon in La Mirada.

On the men's side, the Eagles won by a count of 87-48 while the women defeated GCU 132-58.

Sophomore Jeff Nelson had a strong day on the men's side, winning the 200 backstroke with an impressive time of 2:07.53. The time was nearly two seconds faster than his previous best time which he recorded at the 2007 NAIA Championships, and qualified him for the 2008 Championships.

On the women's side, freshman Erika Johnson dropped nearly a minute off her personal best time in the 1650 freestyle, touching the wall in 19:22.53, good enough for second place and qualifing for the NAIA Championships. She also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:44.59.
