SALT LAKE CITY --- The Biola men's soccer team will gladly bid the state of Utah goodbye after dropping its third straight match in the 45th State, this time falling 1-0 to Olivet Nazarene University on Monday afternoon.
The Eagles (1-3-0) were shutout for the third consecutive time, though again holding an edge in shots. Olivet Nazarene improves to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Tigers recorded their lone goal in the 43rd minute on a great counter attack which sprung an ONU attacker behind the Eagles' defense. Biola netminder Tyler Higgins came off his line to try and snuff the attack, but the Tiger attacker lofted the shot over his outstretched arms for the goal.
Aside from that one blemish, Higgins was masterful in goal, making a total of four saves on the afternoon to help keep his team in the match. He capped things off in the 80th minute with his best collegiate save thus far, making a leaping deflection off a long shot, then grabbing the ball before it trickled over the goal line.
Biola held a 15-8 shot advantage in the match and controlled play in the second half for the most part. The Eagles had a couple of great chances late including a two-on-one with seniors Colin Kilpatrick and Kasey Dunn sneaking behind the Tigers' defense. However, Dunn's shot was snared by the ONU netminder to preserve the shutout.
The Eagles are currently suffering through one of their longest scoring droughts in recent memory, having gone over 338 minutes since scoring their last goal. Its the first time Biola has been shutout in three-straight matches since the 2001 season.
Biola continues its season-high five-game road trip this week, traveling up to the Bay area for matches against Dominican University on Friday (Sept. 7) and Menlo College on Saturday (Sept. 8).
