LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Josh Bennett knocked home a rebound in the 74th minute to break a scoreless battle and give Simon Fraser a 1-0 win over Biola University in the championship match of the 2007 Biola Men's Soccer Classic on Saturday night at Al Barbour Field.
The Eagles, who had won three-straight matches, drops to 4-4-0 on the season while the Clan, ranked No. 16 in the NAIA rankings, improves to 7-2-0.
Both teams matched up well throughout the game with either team creating chances in each half. However, Simon Fraser managed to break through first with a goal in the 74th minute. After an initial shot by a Clan forward was blocked by Biola netminder Tyler Higgins, Bennett followed up with a quick shot.
That proved to be all that Simon Fraser would need as their vaunted defense held off a late Biola attack. SFU netminder Thomas Lindley had a relatively easy night, facing 10 shots but not having to make a save to earn the cleansheet.
Sophomore Shalom Bako recorded five shots to lead the Biola attack.
Vanguard University defeated Trinity International University 3-0 in the other game of the day to finish 1-1 in the tournament while Trinity went 0-2.
Biola opens GSAC play on Saturday (Sept. 22), traveling up to Santa Clarita to face The Master's College at 4:00 p.m.
