MIRA LOMA, Calif. --- Biola's softball playoff run came to a sudden end as Point Loma Nazarene defeated the Eagles 4-0 in the NAIA Region II Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Big League Dreams Park in Mira Loma.
Biola ends its season with a 32-17 record overall while the Sea Lions improved to 39-9 and advance to the regional finals where they face No. 1-ranked Cal Baptist.
The Eagles undoing came in the top of the first inning, as Point Loma picked up four runs on three singles and a two-run home run. Amanda Addie started the rally with a one-out hit up the middle. That was followed with a bloop single by Melissa Gomez. After a fly out, Allie Boeckelman plated the first two runs with a single up the middle, then scored herself on a home run to left by Randi Mead.
That would be plenty of offense for Gomez, who allowed just three singles on the day--all of them to Biola leadoff hitter Amerra Kesterson. Gomes struck out four and did not walk a batter to pick up the win.
Eagle starter Emily Gray pitched two innings and suffered the tough loss, allowing four runs on six hits. Gray, who was the only Biola pitcher to earn a win over Point Loma in the regular season, dropped to 12-6 with the loss.
Senior Katie Gustaveson came in throw the final five innings, entering the game with a runner at third and no out in the third. She was able to work out of the jam with a pair of popups and a ground out. From there, she allowed just two hits and struck out three.
Kesterson finished the game 3-for-3 and wrapped up the season with a .467 batting average. For her career, she batted .422, the second best mark in Biola school.
