Chico Slams Way to 7-1 Win Over Biola

BOX SCORE

CHICO, Calif. --- Lorin Nakagawa hit a grand slam and three Chico State pitchers held Biola to just one run as the Wildcats beat the Eagles 7-1 Friday night at Nettleton Stadium.

Biola falls to 21-15 on the season while Chico State, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, improves to 31-7.

The Wildcats got to Biola starter Jimmy Johnson with four runs in the second inning, capped by Nakagawa's grand slam. Johnson allowed back-to-back singles and hit a batter to load the bases with no one out. Nakagawa then crushed a shot to center to put the Wildcats up 4-0.

Biola got a run back in the top of the third as Matt McQueen led off the inning with a single, then scored on an error by the Wildcats.

But that was as close as Biola would get as the Wildcats added two in the fourth and another in the seventh to seal the deal.

Johnson lasted just 3-1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits to drop to 5-3 on the season.

Chico State starter Nick Bryant allowed the unearned run and scattered five hits over seven innings to stay perfect at 6-0. He has not suffered a defeat in his last 21 starts dating back to last year.

Jason Gillard and Marcus Martinez pitched an inning each to close out the game for Bryant.

Jason Gonzalez continued to hit well on the road trip, going 2-for-4 and now has four hits in six at bats up north. Hawkins Gebbers also picked up a pair of hits in four at bats for the Eagles.

Biola closes out the series on Saturday (Apr. 7) at 12 noon.
